The ultimate guide to printed booklets

Printed booklets are extremely effective marketing tools that are used by all sorts of businesses from one-person operations to large companies. Printed booklets come in a huge range of sizes and at Northside Graphics we also offer our customers a choice of three different binding options, each with its own advantages depending on the size and purpose of your printed booklet. If you’re ready to design or print your own booklet our guide will help you decide what type best suits your needs.

Saddle stitched booklets

Saddle stitching is a very popular binding method for booklets, magazines, brochures and company brochures. The pages are printed as spreads and each spread makes up four printed pages. The spreads are stapled together along the centre then folded so that the staples are along the spine of the booklet. Saddle-stitched books are cost effective and very straightforward to print, making them an excellent choice for any booklets of between eight and 48 pages. They come in multiple sizes from 120mm x 120mm up to A4 size.

PUR perfect bound books

Perfect bound books can be 40 to 700 pages thick and are available in a range of sizes from 120mm x 120mm to A4. The pages are stacked and squared off before being glued together along the spine, then the cover is wrapped around the pages and glued on. We use PUR adhesive that is extremely strong and flexible so your book won’t come apart or the pages become loose. We also print on the spine so as well as looking neat and professional your perfect bound book are great for shelf displays or for stacking. Customers use perfect binding for brochures, magazines and thicker reports.

Wiro bound documents

With wiro bound books the stacked pages are hole-punched along the edge and held together with thick metal wire that’s fed through the holes. Because wiro bound documents can fold fully back around and lie completely flat when open they are perfect for reference books, presentation documents, manuals and reports. They come in five sizes from 1/3 A4 to A3 size and many customers choose clear acetate covers for extra durability. Wiro bound documents can be between four and 180 leaves (360 printed pages) long.

Paper and finish

Paper choice is important and we offer an extensive range of premium uncoated, silk and gloss papers in a variety of weights. There are recycled options and if you want your booklet to look extra special you can choose from our stunning luxury paper range. Many customers choose matt or gloss lamination for covers to give extra strength and durability.

Digital printing and litho printing. What’s the difference?

The Different Between Digital and Litho Printing

We’re often asked about the difference between litho printing and digital printing. They’re by far the two most common forms of print used in marketing and each uses completely different methods to produce your finished, printed job. Litho printing has been around for much longer, dating back to 1796 in some forms. Digital printing became popular towards the end of the 20th century and in recent years huge leaps in technology have seen digital print widely used for everything from flyers, stickers and leaflets to brochures or books. So what’s the difference and why choose one over the other?

Print quality

Traditionally, litho printing was said to be better for printing large blocks of solid colour. However, with the advancements in modern digital printing technology it’s often hard to tell the difference between jobs printed digitally and those printed using litho.

Litho and digital printing each use different finishing techniques. In litho printing the ink soaks into the paper whereas digital presses print on the surface of the paper. This means the same colour might appear slightly different when printed litho as the ink takes on some of the appearance of the paper used.

Turnaround time

Turnaround is generally faster with digital printing because there’s no set up or drying time. When printing very large quantities on a litho press the process runs more quickly than with digital. However, there will still be time required for drying and the entire litho process from set up to completion can take several days compared to digital print which can take as little as one working day.

Cost

Litho print uses plates that are used to apply cyan, magenta, yellow and black to a rubber roller which in turn applies the ink to the paper. This means there is time and cost involved in the setting up of your job before print.

Digital print works like an exceptionally high quality laser printer or photocopier in that there is no set up required. The job is simply loaded and the cost only begins when the operator presses “print”. The customer is charged based on the amount of copies and ink used.

How did we do? – Titanic Hotel Belfast

At Northside we are very proud to supply much of the marketing and print used in the launch of the Titanic Hotel Belfast

How did we do? – Titanic Hotel Belfast
Situated in the original Harland & Wolff Headquarters building, Titanic Hotel Belfast was launched in 2017. The listed building has been carefully restored to preserve features such as the three-storey high ceilings – the oldest surviving example in the world of this style of architecture. The drawing offices where Titanic, Britannic and Olympic luxury liners were born are now part of the hotel whose name and décor is inspired by it’s most famous ship. With Belfast cementing its place as one of Europe’s leading tourist destinations, Titanic Hotel Belfast’s opening last year was no small event.

At Northside we are very proud to supply much of the marketing and print used in the launch and the day-to-day operation of this fantastic hotel and visitor attraction.

Northside Graphics and Titanic Hotel Belfast
We asked Yvonne McIlree, Sales & Marketing Director of Titanic Hotel Belfast, why she chose Northside Graphics. Yvonne told us, “We have worked with Northside Graphics since the day that we opened the hotel. They design and print all of our materials and their quality is fantastic, backed up with great prices and quick turnarounds – something that is essential in our industry.”

What is digital printing?

So, what is digital print and why is it so popular in 2018?

There are many types of print available today. The lithographic press was invented in the 18th century and has continued to develop right up until the present day. However, towards the end of the 20th century we saw great developments in the field of digital print and in recent years advancements in technology have led to digital presses producing work of an exceptionally high standard that’s impossible to tell from litho print. That’s made digital printing extremely popular for everything from invites to large marketing campaigns.
So, what is digital print and why is it so popular in 2018?

Digital printing cuts out the ‘middle man’
With digital print, the digital image or artwork file is sent straight to the printer without the need for a printing plate. Offset printing uses plates and the cost of materials and time taken to set up your job is added to the price you pay. Digital printing cuts out this stage altogether, so you save money.

Digital print means fast print
Digital print jobs are turned around much more quickly than with traditional print. That means you can get your job when you need it – even the next day!

Great value for money
Not only does the digital printing process save you money, it allows you to print very small runs. That means you don’t waste money on print you can’t use. If your information or message is likely to change in the near future you can print a small amount, then amend or update your job for the next run.

Personalise your print
Digital printing allows you to really customise your print. You can add names to your marketing to make it more personal to the recipient, add numbers for tracking or print different variations of a job all on the same print run.

Great for the environment
We’re all trying to reduce unnecessary waste and digital printing keeps it to an absolute minimum. With no minimum print run you won’t waste print. The plate making process used in offset printing also creates waste and the offset process itself uses chemicals that are far from environmentally friendly. Digital printing is clean and efficient – better for the planet and much better for you margins.

Your wedding stationery checklist

Think of wedding stationery and you’ll immediately think of invites. However, your stationery doesn’t stop – or start – there.

Anyone who’s been married or has organised a wedding will know there’s a seemingly endless to do list. Planning begins many months before the big day and organizing wedding stationery is an early part of that planning.
Think of wedding stationery and you’ll immediately think of invites. However, your stationery doesn’t stop – or start – there.
Our wedding stationery checklist will help you plan what you need to do and when you need to do it.
Before the wedding:
Save the date cards
Particularly handy for weddings abroad or if you’re inviting guests who need to travel, save the date cards go out before the official invitations. They typically just give the names of the bride and groom, date of the wedding, location and notify guests that an invitation will follow.

Hen/stag party invites
Many couples send postcard-sized invites for their hen or stag party, especially if the party is to be abroad or themed.

Wedding invites
The wedding invite itself is the most important piece of wedding stationery you’ll have printed. You can get really creative with luxury papers and a design or feel that will set the tone for your big day.

RSVP cards
Sent with the wedding invites, RSVP cards allow your invited guests to confirm their attendance or let you know if they can’t make it.

Evening invites
Often the evening function will include many people not invited to the wedding itself so a separate invite is required.

Directions cards
These might include a map showing easy directions to the location along with contact details for hotels and other accommodation for guests who want to stay overnight after the wedding.

On the big day:
Order of service
These are handed out to guests as they enter the location of the wedding ceremony and help guests follow the proceedings. They might also include the words to hymns or songs.
“Huge thank you for the order of service booklets. I really love them! They have such a beautiful finish.

Thank you so much to you both and everyone at Northside Graphics for all your help with both these booklets and the invitations a few months ago. You made this part of the process much easier!” – Esther
Table plans
Table plans might be handed to guests or printed on large boards on the way into the reception.

Place cards
Folded place cards allow people to find their seats quickly and easily when they enter the reception.

Menus
Wedding menus will be placed on tables at the reception and some couples also include the menu along with the invite. Menus will also detail options for those with specific dietary requirements.
After your wedding:
Thank you cards
Sent after the wedding to thank guests for attending and for their gifts, thank you cards are also given or sent to bridesmaids, flower girls and others who played a part in the big day.
Announcement cards
Some couples who have a small or secret wedding will send cards to friends and family after the event.
