Make sure your leaflets and flyers really work

Getting some leaflets or flyers printed? Here are the most common mistakes to avoid.

Leaflets and flyers are great ways to promote your business or event without breaking the bank. That’s why we see them everywhere from the mail delivered to our homes or businesses, to bars and clubs throughout Northern Ireland. Some we read; some we keep. Many we ignore or quickly discard. If you want to make sure your new leaflets or flyers don’t fall into the latter category, read on. Below we’ve listed some of the most common mistakes people make when they send their leaflets and flyers to print.

Not having a clear message
Have you ever liked an advertisement but can’t actually remember what it was for? That’s fine on television where over a number of weeks you’ll see the same ad many times. But when people see a flyer or leaflet they’ll make an immediate decision on whether it’s worth a second look and chances are they won’t see it again. That means your message must be clear, concise and immediate.

Not having a catchy headline
It doesn’t matter how great your offer or how interesting your message is. Fail to grab the attention quickly and you’ve lost a potential customer. Your headline must be catchy, short and snappy. Got a great offer? That’s your headline. Offering something different? Use that. If you’re printing a leaflet, the purpose of the cover is to persuade the reader to find out more by reading the rest of the leaflet. With a flyer, your main aim is to pique interest so that the reader contacts you or goes to the venue or event you’re advertising. Never try to sell all your products and services on a flyer or the cover of your leaflet.

Using poor quality images
Use images sparingly and make sure they’re great quality. For print any images must be at a resolution of 300dpi at the size they appear. Your new coastal restaurant or Belfast showroom might be stunning in real life, but a poor quality image will make it look uninviting and your business unprofessional. If you’re not sure about your images, check with a professional designer or your printer.

Using poorly written content
We can’t all be great writers and even good content writers can overlook errors and typos. Always check your content and have someone else read it too. It’s easy to miss mistakes when you’ve looked at the same thing for long periods. Not only must all of your content be well written and easy to understand, but it must be grammatically perfect. And a simple spelling mistake or errant apostrophe will cause untold damage to the credibility of your message.
